Buy Experience Not Things
I love mechanical watches. When I bought my first mechanical watch, I was really happy. The happiness lasted for about two weeks, and I was soon looking at other models.
I remember most the family holidays and my kids' sports events. During family meals or outing, we would still talk about it. But I never talk about my watch that cost nearly one month of my salary.
Here is what I learned. Buying things does not necessary bring us happiness. We quickly normalise the experience and will seek out more of the same thing. While experience something or event become part of our memory, we experience the excitement of leading up to it, during and after it. It is the experience of doing things together that bond us. It is also the experience that allow us to grow.
I know it sounds cliche. To make your money worth, buy experience instead of things. It gives you a longer lasting effect and changes you. Both physically and emotionally.
