How to Network in An Industry Dinner without Being Invited
When I first started my business, I identified an industry who is my potential customer. The fastest way to get connected is to attend their association event such as their industry dinner. I have no money, and no connection. Here is what I did.
Through social media, I know about their event location and time. I slipped in early for cocktail event. During their event, I would go around and nod with anyone who have eye contact with me. I have small talks with them about the weather and traffic jams. Just before rounding up the conversation, we would exchange name cards.
A trick that I always use is pointing at someone whom I think is important and ask about that person's details. Sometimes the person that I was talking to would know, sometimes they don't. If I am lucky, I would even get an introduction.
Just before the dinner starts and everyone goes into the hall, I would excuse myself to the toilet. Remember, I did not have a seat at the dinner. If the car park is not too far, I would go back into my car. Either in the toilet or car, I would wait for at least 40 minutes. Then I would get back into the reception hall. There will be people who comes out for toilets or taking pictures. I start small talk again by helping them to take pictures.
I was never pushy or hard sell; I talk to anyone who is willing to have a chat. Just before the dinner is over, I would quietly leave and go home. I did it for at least 2 years to get into that circle. Many people know me now. Nevertheless, I still feel like an imposter and a fraud.
Super tip:The best place to hide is the toilet stall. I hear many gossips and industry news. The information allows me to be seen like insider.
