Living Kindfully

It is the Boring Stuffs that Matters

Once a month, I would volunteer at the recycling centre. I will be helping to load and unload the equipment and recycling items. Sadly, most of the volunteers would leave just before the event is over. That's also the time where we needed the most helps because we need to pack up and clean up the place.

I would curse under my breath for being "stupid" for staying back to clean up the place. Yet, if I don't do it who else would do it? By closing time, I am the youngest volunteer who is left. The rest of the volunteers are at least mid-fifties.

This recycling centre has been operating for at least 10 years. All the proceeds go to the local dialysis centre. None of the volunteers take any form of compensation. They did all the tough and dirty jobs to keep it running.

When I first started as a volunteer, I would do the easiest sexiest job. Separating the items for recycling. Items that are still in good conditions, we will sell cheap as we have limited space for storage. Many young volunteers come and go; it is only the old retirees that held on. Eventually, I volunteered for responsibilities that requires the most strength and dexterity. I do not enjoy doing it, but I know it is important.

Whether we are running a business, a family, a job or a project. It is always the most boring job that needed the most effort. Furthermore, these boring jobs are the foundation of success. We cannot be selective on doing the things that we want. Whether it is sexy or boring, we have to give it our best. The sexy and interesting jobs are normally the easiest, it is always the boring ones that are hardest and matters the most.

Whatever that you are working on now, if you find it boring. Be grateful. Because you are working on something that matters. Give it the best because it built the foundation of your success.

Note: If are you are bored and want to do something different. Trying volunteering, you will experience something new.
