Living Kindfully

My Love Hate Relationship with Learning Python

I am not proficient in programming. Most of my automation and calculation are through Excel. I have been learning Python on and off since 2020. I believe that python is a good language as it is useful for both automation and number crunching.

Given that I have limited human resources and time, automating my business is necessary. Otherwise, I am spending time on work that has low return. As my business grows, the amount of data that I see also grows. Both Excel and python would help me to better understand my clients and the industry.

I know all the benefits of mastering python, but I could not master it. Obviously, I am not spending enough time. I tend to skip around lessons. I lost count on the numbers of half completed programming courses.

Normally, I do all my data analytics in Excel. Thus, I spent more time learning on Excel than Python. Compared to Excel, Python as a tool is more robust. Able to run Python would open more options in my daily work.

My aim is to know enough Python to be effective. Compared to year 2020, there are more effective ways to learn programming now. There is vibe programming where I can learn through prototyping and code explanation.

With AI and the internet, saying "I don't know" is not a valid excuse anymore. Tools and answers are a few keystrokes away. More important, I need to show my kids that I am still learning and wiling to pick up something difficult. There are no reasons for them not to continuous improving themselves.

I admit that I have failed many times in learning Python. For the sake of my business and setting an example, this is a journey that I cannot stop.
