Living Kindfully

What if You die Today?

This afternoon, I received a horrible news that a friend of mine has passed away due to massive heart attack. In fact, he collapsed in the office. Our last discussion, we were talking about work related issues.

If this morning, he wakes up and know that he is going to die in the afternoon, will he still go back to office? What are his last words to his wife, kids and family? We will never know. But we should know what our last words will be.

Not all of us can predict when we are going to die. By pondering about our mortality, this exercise helps us to put our life into prospective. All our revenge will become meaningless. The stress over money seems trivial.

We do not need the big holiday to be wind down. We also do not need the brand-new car to be happy. We can create pockets of memorable moment. A gentle kiss on our spouse cheek. A dedicated moment of listening to our kids on whatever things that they want to talk about. Or even reading a good book in your favorite chair. It is all the tiny moments in life that makes life worth living.

As we evaluate our life through death, what matters most become clear. What we want, and who we are becomes clearer. Without clarify, we live our life like a boat with a broken rudder. It keeps spinning but we have nowhere to go.

"What if you die today? Am I doing what matters most to me?" Today, go forth and live life the way you want to live.
