Living Kindfully

Why I Blog on Linux?

My "writing machine" is a 15 years old Macbook Air installed with Linux Mint. I picked up the Macbook Air from a recycling center. Its iOS could not update anymore and its battery has about 60 minutes of power. I spend around 200 dollars to refurbish the device including buying a new charger and battery. After installing Linux Mint, the battery can last for at least three hours.

Here are the reasons why this is my dedicated writing device.

The Macbook Air's built quality is amazing. Despite its age, the keyboard, aluminium body still works and still feels premium.

The device is lightweight. It is a perfectly portable device. I can carry it to a cafe and get my writing done. Even though the battery last around three hours, I have never need to sit more than two hours. Therefore, I have no battery power issues.

Old outdated Macbook Airs are cheap. If I lose this device, I can get another one cheaply. If is a brand new expensive device, I would also lose my mind if I lose the device.

I have an iron rule not to visit any social media sites while using this device. This device is purely for writing and research purposes. Thus far, I have not broken this rule. When I start up this device, I know I will get my writing done.

Linux Mint is fast and runs smoothly on an old Macbook Air. Linux Mint is a lightweight operating system. It is design to run well in lower spec or outdated devices.

Linux Mint is secure and less prone to virus attack. The effort need to maintain the operating system is low. I only have to update the operating system on a weekly basis.

I have been writing on this Macbook Air Linux Mint hybrid system for more than a year. The experience has been wonderful. I enjoy writing on this device. Despite its age, Linux Mint runs fast and smooth. I have not experience crashes or performance issues. Finally, I get to enjoy the premium quality of a Macbook Air without breaking the bank.
