Entrepreneurship: Learning to Delegate
Earlier this month, I have hired someone to help me. I am a bad delegator, as I have gotten used to do things myself. I feel the pace of the new staff is not as quick as I want. I tend to do most of the things myself and only ask him to follow up for me.
My partner told me to let the new person do all the routine things. To delegate effectively, I need to:
- Explain each action's intended outcome.
- Standardise the processes.
- Prepare each processes' template.
It feels like a no-brainer, but I find myself having to take time out to teach and guide the person. Then I have to track and follow up his work which I can get it all done in half the time.
Delegation is a journey of letting go my ego. I have to believe in others that they can do a better job. I also need to develop trust, to trust my team to do a good job. My team has to trust me that I am here to help them succeed. It is also a journey of patience where I need to be patient with myself and others when there are mistakes. Good communication is a mandatory. Without good communication, the team goes nowhere and gets nothing done.
I am only 3 weeks into the world of delegation. I aim to be an effective delegator by year end. Through delegation, I hope to free up my bandwidth and have more time refining my business.
