Living Kindfully

How Sir Patrick Stewart Affected my Life

I read about Sir Patrick Stewart's passing around 730am. This is actually the first celebrity death that I tear up. I normally do not pay any attention to celebrity. My all-time favourite TV series is Star Trek: TNG. I have the privilege to complete the series when I was studying in Australia.

I absolutely love how he played Captain Jean-Luc Picard. He is a leader who cares and articulate himself well. He gave me hope that in a world filled with deceit and cruelty, we can still hold-on to our values. I do my best to live up the value of Jean-Luc Picard.

Sir Patrick is a person who loves life. He kept working until he could not work anymore. When he is not working, he is enjoying life. He hardly has any scandals. During the lockdown, I would watch videos of him reading William Shakespeare’s sonnets. Again, I am amazed how he carries himself while reading something that I hardly understand. He has inspired me to read widely and read deeply.

There were many amazing quotes from the characters that he played. If I really have to select, this will be my all-time favourite quote: “It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not weakness. That is life.”

The screen writer should receive the credit for that quote. However, his delivery of the line is amazing.

The Star Trek episode that changed my life is Season 6's Tapestry. It is an episode of living life and taking risk. I lived a passionless life until my late 30s. I started to take more risk in life. Whenever I suffer setbacks, I would come back to this episode.

I have never met Sir Patrick Stewart. He does not know me. I truly appreciate how he had inspired millions of fans. I think this is his last and final lessons for us all. Work hard, live deeply and enjoy the small things in life.

Thank you, Sir Patrick Stewart.
