How to Increase Your Awareness on Your Surroundings

Lately, I am trying to reduce my phone usage. I used to take out my phone as soon as I have pockets of time. I mostly read my phone while waiting for something. My phone has become an addiction.

Instead of reading my phone, I now try to increase my awareness on my surroundings. Here is how:

  1. Focus on what is immediately in front of me.
  2. Observe what I see for a few short breath.
  3. Close my eyes and recall what I just saw.
  4. Open my eyes and compare what I have recalled.
  5. Observe what I see for another few more short breath.
  6. Close my eyes and recall again what I just saw.
  7. Repeat as many steps as necessary.

When I reach step 6, what I recall is more than my first attempt.

This exercise has:

  1. Allowed me to see and observe things that I have taken for granted.
  2. I am more aware of my surroundings.
  3. I do not miss my phone and there is no withdrawal.
  4. I slowed down time and see more of my life.
