How to Increase Your Awareness on Your Surroundings
Lately, I am trying to reduce my phone usage. I used to take out my phone as soon as I have pockets of time. I mostly read my phone while waiting for something. My phone has become an addiction.
Instead of reading my phone, I now try to increase my awareness on my surroundings. Here is how:
- Focus on what is immediately in front of me.
- Observe what I see for a few short breath.
- Close my eyes and recall what I just saw.
- Open my eyes and compare what I have recalled.
- Observe what I see for another few more short breath.
- Close my eyes and recall again what I just saw.
- Repeat as many steps as necessary.
When I reach step 6, what I recall is more than my first attempt.
This exercise has:
- Allowed me to see and observe things that I have taken for granted.
- I am more aware of my surroundings.
- I do not miss my phone and there is no withdrawal.
- I slowed down time and see more of my life.
