Living Kindfully

The Importance of A Superhero to a Special Needs Child

I received an invitation to watch the latest Spiderman movie. I grow up watching loads of superheroes and sci-fi shows. I am definitely a fan of such genre. Obviously, I agreed to catch the movie.

I received a message from another friend asking whether I am going to the same show, which I said yes. She is a single mother with a special needs child. The mother did not get her son tested, but he is socially awkward and could not communicate well. He is now in his early twenties and studying business in university. He has no friends.

A while ago, the mother asked me what can she do to help her son? He loves watching Batman cartoons. I suggest to her to let him watch Batman cartoons. After watching the cartoons, ask him what Batman means to him? What kind of quality that he can learn from Batman? What would Batman do, to stay fit and healthy? What would Batman do when there is schoolwork? Etc.

The mother told me that the son has improved. He tries his best to live up to the value of Batman. She hoped to introduce her son to me during the movie event.

I am a very big nerd and do not have many friends. During the first 25 years of my life, I only have sci-fi in my life. Housemates made fun of me that I talk about Star Trek as if it is real. Internet then was still at its infancy; I could not find my "own kind". Whether it is sci-fi or superheroes shows, I watch it alone. But it is also those shows that kept me moving and aim big.

Everyone needs a superhero to look up to. It does not need to be real but enough to inspire and take action.
