When Kindness is Stained by Selfishness
I just lost an insurance renewal for a site. The building just made a notification on a landslide claim. The building is located next to a river.
I told the building manager that to maximise the chances of claim. They should renew with the same insurance company. In addition, the management office can hire a 3rd party consultant to help with the assessment. The report helps to strengthen the claim.
The building manager hinted to me that the committee has a preferred insurance agent. Thus, my chance of renewal is weak. I told him that it is okay, they can use their preferred agent but continue with the same insurance company. During the renewal meeting, I was accused of blackmailing the committee through the claim.
I feel disappointed by that remark. I wanted the best for the client, gave them a complete strategy to maximise the claim and willing to give up the renewal. Yet, I was accused of something which I probably should have done.
When someone is selfish, everything they see are also selfish. It is illogical for a committee wanting to change insurance provider and the agent when there is a six figure claims in the pipeline.
When you realised there is nothing more than you can do, just lick your wounds and move on. Focus on people who deserves your attention and professionalism.
