Living Kindfully

You Can't Save Everyone But You can Save One

Someone told me that she cannot see herself doing charity work because she feels useless and helpless when there is so much pain in the world. I know how that feels. When I first volunteered to feed the homeless, the food that we gave is far lesser than the homeless. I always feel bad for those who did not receive the food. As time passes, I learned to accept that we can only do what we can.

When you are volunteering, be humble to the fact that your contribution is little and limited. You are not there to save the world. The most important person is not the whole world but the person who is right in front of you. That person whom you are serving deserves 100% of your attention.

It is true that there are many more who are suffering. What we can do is limited. However, you should also not underestimate the power of other individuals. A single candlelight will not chase away the darkness, the power of many will light up a room.

Before you sign up anything, sit down and reflect whether is there anyone who immediately needs your help? That person is closer than you think that person is right in the mirror. Yes. It is yourself. Remember, you deserve to be saved by yourself. Charity does not only start from home, but charity also starts from yourself. Save yourself first before saving others. That's not selfish, that's love.
